Rohit Sharma’s MS Dhoni-Style Exit Plan Rejected by BCCI, Gill-Pant in Line for Test Captaincy

In a major revelation, reports suggest that Rohit Sharma wanted to retire from Test cricket mid-series during India’s upcoming England tour, mirroring MS Dhoni’s surprise exit in 2014. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) did not approve the proposal. According to a Sky Sports report, selectors emphasized the need for stability throughout the series and offered Rohit a chance to play—but not as captain. Rohit chose to retire altogether, a decision that came as a shock to fans. Just days later, Virat Kohli also stepped away from red-ball cricket, deepening the leadership vacuum.

The BCCI selection panel is now considering Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant for the Test captaincy, with the squad announcement expected around May 23. While both players have demonstrated potential, there are internal discussions about whether Gill is ready to lead, as his spot in the Test XI is not entirely cemented. Some insiders believe he may be better suited for a vice-captaincy role initially.

Legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar weighed in on the situation, highlighting that IPL captaincy experience provides a solid foundation for future national team leaders. With Gill captaining Gujarat Titans, Pant leading Lucknow Super Giants, and Shreyas Iyer guiding Punjab Kings, the stage is set for a new generation of leaders to emerge.

Gavaskar noted that these young captains reflect qualities from Dhoni, Rohit, and Kohli, bringing intensity, clarity, and passion to the role. He believes it may take a couple of years for them to fully develop into world-class leaders.
